The 22 Most Anticipated Electric Vehicles Coming in 2022

We are now on the cusp of 2022 and hopefully it will be a brilliant new beginning and not 2020 II. One of the most optimistic predictions we can share in the new year is the prospect of further EV adoption, led by a host of new EV models from all major automotive brands. Here are some of the most anticipated electric vehicles planned for 2022, along with a few quick facts about each so you can start planning which ones to test first.
In compiling this list, we must admit that we had to take a step back to appreciate the true scale and impact that so many electric vehicles will have on consumers in 2022.
When we close the book in 2021, some of them may start leaking to buyers now, but in general these are 2022/2023 models that (should) be available to consumers within the next 12 months.
For simplicity, they are sorted by automaker in alphabetical order. Also, we’re not here to play favorites, we’re here to tell you about all the upcoming electric vehicle options.
Let’s start with BMW and its upcoming iX electric SUV. Initially released as a concept electric vehicle called the iNext to compete with the Tesla Model 3, consumers were delighted to see the electric 3 Series expected to hit the market for around $40,000.
Unfortunately for those drivers, the iNext evolved into the iX, the luxury crossover we see today, with a starting MSRP of $82,300 before taxes or destination fees. However, the iX promises 516bhp twin-engine all-wheel drive, 0-60mph in 4.4 seconds and a range of 300 miles. It can also restore a range of up to 90 miles with just 10 minutes of DC fast charging.
The Cadillac Lyriq will be the brand’s first electric vehicle to debut on GM’s BEV3 platform, part of the parent company’s strategy to launch 20 new electric vehicles by 2023.
We’ve learned (and shared) a lot about the Lyriq since it was officially unveiled in August 2020, including its three-foot display, head-up AR display, and an infotainment system designed to compete with Tesla’s UI.
After its presentation last August, we learned that the Cadillac Lyriq will also be priced at just under $60,000 at $58,795. As a result, Lyriq sold out in just 19 minutes. As we expect delivery in 2022, Cadillac recently shared footage of its latest prototype before it goes into production.
Canoo may not be a household name compared to some of the other automakers on this list, but one day it might be thanks to its know-how and unique design. The Canoo Lifestyle Vehicle will be the company’s first product, as several electric vehicles have already been unveiled and are scheduled to launch in 2023.
This makes sense, since the Lifestyle Vehicle is the first electric vehicle the company released back at the time of its launch under the name EVelozcity. Canoo describes its Lifestyle Vehicle as a “loft on wheels”, and for good reason. With 188 cubic feet of interior space for two to seven people, it’s surrounded by panoramic glass and a driver’s front window that overlooks the street.
With an MSRP of $34,750 (excluding taxes and fees), the Lifestyle Vehicle will be offered in four different trim levels to suit a variety of needs, from Delivery trim to a loaded Adventure version. They all promise a range of at least 250 miles and are available for pre-order with a $100 deposit.
Electric vehicle company Henrik Fisker’s second version to bear his name, this time with its flagship Ocean SUV, looks to be on the right track. The first version of Ocean, announced in 2019, includes many other concepts that Fisker is considering.
The ocean really started to become a reality last October when Fisker announced a deal with manufacturing giant Magna International to build an electric car. Since its debut at the 2021 Los Angeles Auto Show, we’ve been able to get up close and personal with the Ocean and learn about its three price tiers and unique technologies such as the Ocean Extreme solar roof.
The FWD Ocean Sport starts at just $37,499 before taxes and has a range of 250 miles. Given the current U.S. federal tax credit, those who qualify for the full rebate can buy an Ocean for less than $30,000, a huge benefit for consumers. With the help of Magna, the Ocean EV should arrive in November 2022.
The Ford F-150 Lightning could be the most popular electric car in 2022…2023 and beyond. If the electrified version sells as well as the petrol F-series (the best-selling pickup truck in the US for 44 years), Ford will have to struggle to keep up with demand for the Lightning.
Lightning, in particular, has racked up over 200,000 bookings, none of which include business customers (although the company has also created a separate business to support this segment). Given Ford’s Lightning production split program, it’s already sold out through 2024. With the Lightning’s standard 230-mile range, home charging, and the ability to charge other EVs at Level 2, Ford seems to know the Lightning wins on speed.
The company is already doubling down on Lightning production to meet demand, and there are no electric vehicles yet. The 2022 Lightning commercial model has an MSRP of $39,974 pre-tax and goes further, including features like a 300-mile extended battery.
Ford said its sales books will open in January 2022, with Lightning production and deliveries starting in the spring.
Genesis is another car brand that has promised to go all-electric and phase out all new ICE models by 2025. To help kick off a new EV transition in 2022, the GV60 is the first dedicated Genesis EV model to be powered by Hyundai Motor Group’s E-GMP platform.
The crossover SUV (CUV) will feature the famous Genesis luxury interior with a unique crystal ball central control unit. The GV60 will be offered with three powertrains: single-motor 2WD, standard and performance all-wheel drive, as well as a “Boost Mode” that instantly increases the GV60′s maximum power for a more dynamic ride.
The GV60 doesn’t have an EPA range yet, but the estimated range starts at 280 miles, followed by 249 miles and 229 miles in AWD trim – all from a 77.4 kWh battery pack. We know that the GV60 will have a battery conditioning system, a multi-input charging system, vehicle-to-load (V2L) technology, and plug-and-play payment technology.
Genesis hasn’t announced pricing for the GV60, but the company says the electric car will go on sale in the spring of 2022.
As mentioned, GM still has some work to do in terms of EV deliveries in 2022, but the big spark for one of the world’s biggest automakers will be its massive, electrified version of its vehicle family, the Hummer.
In 2020, the public will focus on the new Hummer electric vehicle and what it will offer, including SUV and pickup versions. GM initially admitted that it did not have a working prototype truck when it first introduced it. However, in December, the company released impressive working footage of the Hummer electric car to the masses.
While the most affordable version of the new Hummer isn’t expected until 2024, buyers can expect pricier and more luxurious versions in 2022 and 2023. While we’re calling it the electric car of 2022, the electric Hummer GM Edition 1, which costs over $110,000, recently began shipping to early buyers. However, last year these versions sold out within ten minutes.
So far, the specs are impressive, including features like crab walking. However, these Hummers vary so much by trim (and model year) that it’s easier to get full details directly from GMC.
The IONIQ5 is the first EV from Hyundai Motor’s new sub-brand, the all-electric IONIQ, and the first EV to debut on the group’s new E-GMP platform. Electrek had several opportunities to get to know this new CUV up close, and it definitely got us excited.
Part of the IONIQ5′s appeal is its wide body and long wheelbase, making it one of the largest interior spaces in its class, surpassing the Mach-E and VW ID.4.
It is also equipped with cool technologies such as head-up display with augmented reality, advanced ADAS and V2L capabilities, which means it can charge your devices while camping or on the road, and even charge other electric vehicles. Not to mention the fastest charging speed in the game right now.
However, the biggest benefit of an electric crossover in 2022 may be its price. Hyundai has shared a surprisingly affordable MSRP for the IONIQ5, starting at less than $40,000 for the Standard Range RWD version and going up to less than $55,000 for the HUD-equipped AWD Limited Trim.
The IONIQ5 has been on sale in Europe for most of 2021, but 2022 is just getting started in North America. Check out the first Electrek hard drive for more features.
Hyundai Group’s sister Kia EV6 will join the IONIQ5 in 2022. The electric vehicle will be the third electric vehicle to be launched on the E-GMP platform in 2022, marking the start of Kia’s transition to all-electric models.
Like the Hyundai model, the Kia EV6 received rave reviews and demand from the very beginning. Kia recently revealed that the electric car will arrive in 2022 with a range of up to 310 miles. Virtually every EV6 trim outperforms the EPA’s IONIQ5 lineup due to its external shape… but it comes at a cost.
Now we don’t want to speculate on prices as we haven’t had an official word from Kia yet, but it looks like the MSRP for the EV6 is expected to start at $45,000 and go up from there, although one particular Kia dealer is reporting a higher much price.
Regardless of where those official prices actually appear, all EV6 trims are expected to go on sale in the US in early 2022.
In truth, Lucid Motors’ flagship Air sedan will come in three separate variants expected to launch in 2022, but we think the Pure version could be the one that really boosts the luxury electric vehicle maker’s sales.
The top-of-the-line Air Dream Edition began rolling off the Lucid AMP-1 factory line last October, and deliveries of the planned 520 vehicles have continued since then. While this $169,000 wonder kickstarted the Lucid’s long-awaited market launch, the more affordable interior that comes with it will help make it a top-notch luxury electric sedan.
While buyers should see Grand Touring and Touring trim levels for 2022, we’re most excited about the $77,400 Pure. Sure, it’s still an expensive electric car, but it’s about $90,000 less than the Airs that are on the roads right now. Future Pure drivers can expect 406 miles of range and 480 horsepower, though that doesn’t include the Lucid’s panoramic roof.
Lotus’ upcoming electric car and first SUV is by far the most mysterious car on this list, not least because we don’t even know its official name yet. Lotus is teasing the “Type 132″ codename in a series of short videos in which only a glimpse of the SUV can be seen at a time.
It was originally announced as part of Lotus’ four future electric vehicles as it is expected to go fully electric by 2022. Of course, there’s still a lot we don’t know, but here’s what we’ve gathered so far. The Type 132 will be a BEV SUV based on a new lightweight Lotus chassis, equipped with LIDAR technology and active front grille shutters. Its interior will also be completely different from previous Lotus vehicles.
Lotus claims the Type 132 SUV will accelerate from 0 to 60 mph in about three seconds and will use a state-of-the-art 800-volt high-speed electric vehicle charging system. Finally, the 132 will feature a 92-120kWh battery pack that can be charged to 80 percent in about 20 minutes using an 800V charger.
You’ve probably already noticed that this list includes the first EVs from many automakers, which is a big reason 2022 is likely to be the year of EVs. Japanese automaker Mazda continues this trend with its upcoming MX-30, which will be available at a very attractive price but with some concessions.
When the MX-30 was announced this April, we learned that the base model would have a very reasonable MSRP of $33,470, while the Premium Plus package would be just $36,480. Given potential federal, state and local incentives, drivers could face price drops of up to 20 years.
Unfortunately, for some consumers, that cost still doesn’t justify the MX-30′s anemic range, as its 35.5kWh battery provides just 100 miles of range. However, the MX-30 is a highly anticipated EV in 2022, as drivers who understand their daily mileage needs and qualify for tax credits can drive the right car for a much lower price than many competitors.
Also, it’s good to see a Japanese company offering an electric car. The MX-30 is available now.
Mercedes-Benz has begun offering electric vehicles to its fleet with a new line of EQ vehicles, starting with the luxury EQS. In the US in 2022, the EQS will join the EQB SUV and the EQE, a smaller electric version of the former.
The mid-size sedan will be equipped with a 90 kWh battery, single-engine rear-wheel drive with a range of 410 miles (660 km) and 292 hp. Inside the electric car, the EQE is very similar to the EQS with the MBUX hyperscreen and large touchscreen display.
NIO’s ET5 is the latest EV announcement on our list, and one of the few that has no plans to enter the US market. It was unveiled at the end of December at the manufacturer’s annual NIO Day event in China.
In 2022, the EV will be the second sedan offered by NIO, alongside the previously announced ET7. Tesla has a strong competitor in China, ET5, as Nio promises (CLTC) a range of 1,000 kilometers (about 621 miles).
